Allegheny County tops the commonwealth for growth

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County ranks No. 1 in Pennsylvania and 69th nationwide in a new study of places experiencing the most growth in their local economies.

SmartAsset determined its GDP — or gross domestic product — growth index based on a combination of business growth, incoming investment, GDP growth and new building permits.

GDP growth of $1.36 billion boosted Allegheny County to a GDP growth index of 28.67, ahead of second place Philadelphia which scored 27.62. Some 80% of the top 10 counties are in the southeastern part of the state.
