City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County leaders bring back program to staff local pools

PITTSBURGH — City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County leaders are hoping to fill a critical need to staff pools this summer.

Wednesday, leaders launched the ninth annual Learn and Earn program at Perry Traditional Academy.

The program allows people between age 14 and 24 get six weeks of paid employment while filling positions across our region.

One of the most critical needs is for lifeguards.

“We’re always short, we’re planning on doing what we did last year, open up as many of the pools as we can, we know this is a relief for the children, it gives them positive interaction, positive activity so that’s why we need lifeguards,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
