Officers pull driver from burning car after collision with bus in Downtown Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Police officers rescued a driver from a burning car after it burst into flames when it collided with a Port Authority bus in Downtown Pittsburgh late Thursday.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Grant Street, which was shut down for several hours.

Three police officers in the area saw the car engulfed in flames and jumped in to help. They pulled the driver from the burning car, who was unconscious at the time. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A driver and five passengers were aboard the Port Authority bus involved in the crash. Four of the passengers were taken the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ed Kress was working in his downtown office when the crash happened. He said he heard what sounded like a vehicle going very quickly, and then a loud noise.

“So actually, there was an explosion,” Kress said. “And I saw the bus parked right over there, so it appears the car probably hit the bus and that’s what caused the car to explode.”

Police are still investigating how the crash happened. The victim’s name or age has not been released.
