Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank launches passcards for families in need

PITTSBURGH — “Food Changes Everything” — that’s the motto of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. A new tool launched by the nonprofit is a game changer of its own.

This week marks the official launch of passcards, small, scannable pieces of plastic that can easily attach to a keychain to help simplify the distribution of food for families in need.

With a quick scan of a card at Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distribution events, a family’s profile is instantly retrieved, instead of people having to fill out the same paperwork every time they come, serving them with dignity more efficiently and discreetly.

“It can really expedite the process of letting customers get through the line, not having to worry about that… and letting them focus more on the actual getting of the food,” said Jordan Hartman, distributions manager for the food bank.

“I think it’s better, especially if you’re able to go in and get what you want,” said Kelly Benson, who lives in Whitaker.

The food bank holds more than 20 distribution events every month in more than 11 counties, so customers can get their cards there or have them mailed to them, making assistance more accessible to those who need it the most.

“I think it would get a lot more people out there that need the help that are kid of afraid to go get the help… make it a little easier for everyone,” Benson said.

“This month, September and October, we’re going to be doing a really big push to get these out,” Hartman said.
