Local shelters briefly waiving fees to help find homes for animals

PITTSBURGH — Several local animal shelters are making an extra effort to find homes for their animals by waiving their fees.

The Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) and Animal Freinds are both offering the deal as part of “Adopt Local, Yinz.”

Anyone who adopts an animal older than 6 months will not have to pay an adoption fee or a post-adopt medical exam fee. Adoptors will still have to purchase their own county licenses. The shelters are also offering a discount for dog training classes and goodie bags.

All animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped, given tick and flea protection and given vaccinations appropriate to their age. Dogs 6 months or older will also be tested for heartworm.

The shelters cumulatively have over 500 animals in their care. They say the demand for pets was high during the COVID-19 pandemic but the trend is beginning to drop off.

“As an open-door shelter, HARP accepts all animals in need, and provides them with the care they need and the love they deserve,” said Gerry Delon, HARP’s Executive Director. “But we need to find homes for all the deserving animals waiting to be adopted, especially those who may have been with us for quite some time. By working together with Animal Friends, we can have a greater impact in finding these animals loving families and a place to call home in our community.”

The deal is in place on June 3 and June 4.
