Man rescued by emergency crews after allegedly mugging someone, jumping into Pittsburgh river

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Police, paramedics and River Rescue had to go after a man accused of mugging a person and jumping into the river.

Emergency crews were called to Point State Park just before 9 a.m. Sunday after a caller reported that someone stole their Fitbit off their wrist.

Channel 11 learned the suspect ran from police and jumped into the water.

“That’s crazy,” said Jarryd Schwartz from the North Side, “I mean, random people could be walking and try to enjoy the morning and all of a sudden, you know, they get attacked.”

The suspect was allegedly doing the backstroke in the river, then hanging on a channel marker. He was also combative with emergency responders before he was pulled onto a river rescue boat and taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital.

State Park Rangers are handling the investigation.

Channel 11 is working to learn more about the suspect.
