PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are on alert for any protests that may happen Friday evening after the release of bodycam footage showing the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols.
Police told 11 News today they are not aware of any planned demonstrations, but they will make it a priority to respect demonstrators first amendment rights while also ensuring public safety if any plans arise.
The family of Nichols is calling for peace ahead of the video release.
“We’re very satisfied with the charges,” said Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather. “More importantly, we want peace, we do not want any type of uproar, we do not want any type of disturbance. We want peaceful protest. That’s what the family wants. That’s what the community wants.”
11 News reached out to the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, who is also ready to assist if needed.
