Zambelli Fireworks owner shares how company prepares for Pittsburgh celebration

PITTSBURGH — It’s almost go-time for Zambelli fireworks.

The crews have been setting up on the Ohio River in preparation for Pittsburgh’s Fourth of July celebration.

The show has been a tradition in the Steel City for more than a century.

“Pittsburgh’s my hometown. Pittsburgh’s my love. We want to bring our pyrotechnic joy to Pittsburgh,” said George Zambelli, CEO and owner of Zambelli Fireworks.

Zambelli said that a lot goes into bringing the show to life. Workers have to put mortars onto the barges in the river and set up in a way where they will go off at the proper angle.

Six technicians have been working over the course of the week to prepare for the show. Zambelli said that different designers and choreographers have pitched in to make the magic happen for this year and years to follow.

“They collectively, starting July 6-7 this year, for the next year, come up with new ideas, new pattern shells...we’re working on some special ones right now.”

The fireworks are scheduled to begin around 9:35 p.m.
