Single statewide opening day of trout season approved by Fish and Boat Commission

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Starting next year, trout season will open on the same day across the entire state of Pennsylvania.

Officials with the Fish and Boat Commission approved the change at their meeting Monday in Harrisburg.

The new statewide opening day will be the first Saturday in April starting in 2022, meaning there won’t be a separate regional opening day for counties in the southeastern part of the state. A single, statewide Mentored Youth Day will now also occur one week prior to the opening day:

  • Saturday, March 26, 2022 - Statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day
  • Saturday, April 2, 2022 - Statewide Opening Day of Trout Season

The board voted to remove Raccoon Creek State Park Upper Pond in the Group Camping Area Lake from the Catch and Release Lakes program. The lake will be drained early next winter to prepare for a floodplain restoration project. There are currently no season, size or creel limits for all fish in the lake to encourage anglers to fish there. The park is located in Beaver County.
