3 American tourists found dead at Bahamas resort identified

Bahamian authorities on Monday identified the three American tourists found dead Friday morning at a Sandals resort on the island nation.

Bahamian acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper confirmed the deceased guests included a Tennessee couple and a Florida man, and he reiterated in Monday’s comments that foul play is not suspected in the deaths, CNN reported.

Police officials identified the late couple as Michael Phillips, 68, and Robbie Phillips, 65, who were guests of the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Great Exuma. The identity of the third Sandals fatality, Vincent Paul Chiarella, 64, was previously confirmed by his family, NBC News reported.

Meanwhile, Chiarella’s wife, Donnis, 65, was airlifted to a Miami hospital and remained in serious condition, Royal Bahamas Police Commissioner Paul Rolle said at the news conference.

Meanwhile, Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed to the newspaper that it is investigating a report that a couple complained of feeling ill and sought treatment at an area hospital.

According to Bahamas authorities, resort staff notified George Town Police on Friday morning that a man was found unresponsive in one of the villas. While officers were en route to the call, a second report of a man and woman found unresponsive in a seprate villa was received, USA Today reported.

No signs of trauma were found on any of the bodies, according to a Royal Bahamas Police Force statement obtained by CNN.

Bahamas police are still investigating what caused the four Americans to fall ill, and the U.S. State Department is “closely monitoring” the probe, a department spokesperson told USA Today on Sunday.

Sandals Resorts operates more than a dozen all-inclusive centers in the Atlantic and Caribbean, the network reported.
