According to PennDOT, each flooding closure diverts approximately 43,000 vehicles.

“It floods really badly, and you can’t really drive down there, which kind of makes it inconvenient for me,” Niviah Andre said.

Leah Breisinger said she is glad the problem is being addressed.

“Even the smallest amount of water causes the whole road to get shut down, so it’s good that they’re starting now rather than later,” Breisinger said.

Drivers can use Fort Pitt Boulevard for the posted detours. The westbound Grant Street exit and the Stanwix Street on-ramp will remain open, allowing drivers to exit at Grant Street and enter the inbound Parkway at Stanwix Street.

Two through lanes will remain open to the Fort Pitt Bridge.

No eastbound lane restrictions are anticipated in the corridor as part of the project.

PennDOT also plans a 12-day full closure of the westbound roadway during the 2027 construction season for pavement reconstruction.

The entire project is expected to be completed in fall 2027.

Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.

Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

It added that one of its cutters would keep searching the water overnight and into Sunday.

According to the Coast Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that the Gulfstream G100 lost contact very early Saturday morning. Air traffic audio indicates that it may have been “coming in blind” when a storm loomed ahead shortly before it vanished.

The pilot reported electrical problems and declared an emergency as the jet approached the coast, according to air traffic control audio posted by LiveATC.net. “Roger, you said you’re coming in blind. Is that what you said?” a controller can be heard asking the pilot.

That makes Mary Schiavo, who is a former Inspector General of the Transportation Department, think the plane may have lost its navigational instruments just as a storm moved across its path on radar. The plane also descended sharply from its cruising altitude of around 24,000 feet to around 10,000 feet, according to preliminary data from flight tracking site FlightRadar24.

“Something bad happened with this big drop, and they flew into this big storm. It’s a terrible place to have a loss of your instruments and be flying blind,” said Schiavo, who is an aviation attorney. “It’s very easy to get disoriented and not know if you’re turning, climbing, descending, etc.”

The Canadian-registered air ambulance jet had four crew members and two passengers aboard when it departed Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport for the nighttime flight to Massachusetts, according to a statement from the Bermuda airport’s operator, Skyport.

Transport Canada was closely monitoring and working with authorities on search and rescue efforts, the country’s Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon said on the social platform X.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the situation, but it did not say immediately if it would investigate.

Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.

Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

The strategy seeks to align academic programming, staffing, resources, transportation and facilities to create a consistent student experience.

Major school reorganizations and program transitions under the plan are scheduled to begin in the 2027–2028 school year.

Over the summer, administrative teams began translating the approved document into operational structures for staffing, academic programming, facilities, enrollment, transportation and communications.

Summer preparations included cross-functional workforce planning, the creation of school-based budget tools and the development of educational specifications for specialty learning spaces. District staff also conducted a feasibility study for Northview Elementary and planned programming for Gifted and special education services.

Wayne N. Walters, superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools, noted that approving the plan was only the initial step in a multiyear effort.

“Approval of the Future-Ready Plan was an important milestone, but it also marked the beginning of the detailed work required to bring the plan to life,” Walters said. “This dashboard gives our families, staff, Board and community another way to see that work unfold, understand what is happening across the District and track our progress as we prepare for the transitions ahead.”

District officials designed the dashboard to highlight major operational decisions and key deliverables rather than list every daily administrative task. Walters emphasized that public tracking remains central to the implementation effort.

“Our commitment is not simply to implement the Future-Ready Plan, but to make the implementation process visible,” Walters said. “Families and staff should be able to understand where we are, what comes next and how the many pieces of this work connect. This dashboard is another tool for ensuring that accountability and transparency remain central throughout implementation.”

Click here to access the tracking tool online.

Pittsburgh Public Schools will update the milestone dashboard on a quarterly basis. District officials will continue tracking departmental progress on the public portal leading into the major school and program transitions scheduled for the 2027–2028 academic year.

Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.

Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW
