Local elementary students raise nearly $15,000 for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

PITTSBURGH — Students at two elementary schools in the Moon Area School District raised nearly $15,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The students took part in LLS’s Hero Squad Program, which is a science-based learning program in which participants learn leadership, the importance of helping others and the impact of helping to save lives.

During the program, students collected donations to honor Madelina DeLuca, a student a Bon Meade Elementary who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2014 when she was 23 months old. She endured chemotherapy, bone marrow biopsies and blood and platelet infusions. As of July of 2020, DeLuca celebrated 5 years cancer free!

Students at Bon Meade raised over $12,338 and students at McCormick Elementary School raised over $2,000.
