17-year-old found fatally shot in Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood ID'd

PITTSBURGH — A 17-year-old boy was found fatally shot in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood Monday night after attending a court-ordered after-school program.

Police and paramedics were called to the area of North Mathilda and Mossfield streets just after 9 p.m.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the victim was shot to death. It was not immediately clear how many times the boy was shot.

The 17-year-old, whom police identified Tuesday as Dalon Williams of Garfield, was shot after he was dropped by a van belonging to the Community Intensive Supervision Program, or CISP. The Allegheny County court system sponsors the after-school and weekend program for juvenile offenders.

Pittsburgh Public Schools spokesperson Ebony Pugh confirmed Williams was an 11th grade student at Pittsburgh Milliones.

Student Support Services staff was at the school Tuesday to help any students struggling to cope with Williams' death, Pugh said.

Channel 11 News learned that a similar incident happened two years ago when someone shot at a student as he got off a CISP van. He wasn’t hurt, but the van’s driver was. In 2009, several CISP vans were targeted, but no one was hurt.

The program’s director did not immediately respond to requests to learn how many other times CISP participants have been targeted and what has been done to protect them.

As of Tuesday evening, police were still looking for the gunman.
