2 dead, 2 injured in shooting at Swissvale apartment complex

SWISSVALE, Pa. — Two men were killed and two men were wounded Monday night during a shooting in Swissvale, Allegheny County police said.

Police and paramedics were called to an apartment complex in the 400 block of Smokey Wood Drive at 8:18 p.m. for a reported shooting.

Officials identified the two men who were killed as 18-year-old Robert Detorre III, of Swissvale, and 19-year-old Anthony Hoots, of Turtle Creek. Police said it is believed they were shooting at each other and that robbery was the motivation.

Investigators said they aren't sure who fired the first shot or why, but multiple shots were fired. Allegheny County police Lt. Andrew Schurman said at least two guns were at the scene.

Neighbors told Channel 11 they really didn't know the victims, they just know that whoever lived in that apartment just moved in a couple of months ago.

Schurman said one of the victims was the leaseholder for the apartment complex. He does not believe there was a forced entry, and police said they are unaware of any surveillance video.

At the time of his death, Hoots was awaiting trial for a December road rage incident. He was accused of firing shots at a car with a 2-year-old in the back seat.

Police are not releasing the names of the two men who were wounded. One has been released from a hospital and the other is expected to be OK.

Five police agencies -- Allegheny County, Edgewood, Wilkinsburg, Forest Hills and Braddock Hills -- were at the scene.

Anyone with information or who might have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area is asked to call Swissvale police or the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit at 412-473-1300.
