3,000 pumpkins adorn West Virginia home

KENOVA, W.Va. — Some serious Halloween spirit is on display in West Virginia.

Volunteers are helping get pumpkins gutted and carved, all for the Kenova Pumpkin House .

Owner Ric Griffith told WCHS that 3,000 pumpkins will be on display again this year.

Getting the pumpkins ready takes several days and about 1,000 volunteers.

But Griffith says it's worth it: "The volunteers are my favorite part. Partly because they bail me out each year and helped me do this but also because of their reaction. They are proud that we have this in our area. And I never thought of it in those terms that when we first began, but they actually invite people that they know from other areas to come in ... One of the neatest things anyone said to us was said by an elderly lady, who said to me 'You know as you grow up you lose the wonderment of childhood. Never do you have the same excitement you had on Christmas morning or when you got your first bicycle.' But she had tears in her eyes and said 'I had that feeling today and I just wanted to thank you.'"
