52-year-old man killed by train in Aspinwall

ASPINWALL, Pa. — A man was killed in an accident involving a train in Aspinwall.

First responders were called to the area of Freeport Road and Waterworks Drive just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The victim was found not far from a crossing.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as 52-year-old John Towle, of Aspinwall. Investigators believe he had ample warning that a train was approaching.

“The indication we had is that there were a lot of sirens blowing prior to the incident,” Aspinwall Police Chief David Caplan said.

Freeport Road was blocked off and train traffic in the area was stopped during the investigation. Freeport Road reopened just before 11 p.m.

A Norfolk Southern spokesperson said the train was headed east when it struck one person. The two crew members onboard the train were not injured.

No additional details were available.
