Baby in critical condition, man taken to jail following North Side altercation

PITTSBURGH — A baby was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and a man was taken to jail after police discovered them together in Pittsburgh’s East Allegheny neighborhood early Wednesday.

Police told Channel 11’s Jennifer Tomazic they were concerned with the welfare of the child at the corner of Cedar Avenue and Pressley Street because the 3-month-old baby was wearing only a onesie and was outside with the man.

When Channel 11 arrived on the scene, an officer was seen walking a baby carrier to the back of an ambulance.

The baby was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition.

Officers said the man, later identified as 25-year-old Manderick Parris Edwards, was arguing with a woman, who was his girlfriend and the mother of the child, when police discovered them at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.%

"The baby was perfectly fine. She was eating, and there was nothing wrong. She was in good condition.  Now, whatever happened when he took the baby, I don't know,” Edward’s mother, Carmen Revis, said.

According to Revis, Edwards brought the baby over to her house before the altercation.

“He's not the type of person who would hurt a child. He has nieces and nephews. He never did anything to them,” she said.

Police paperwork obtained Thursday by Channel 11 News stated that Edwards was allegedly under the influence and threw the 3-month-old baby around, swinging her through the air in the 500 block of Suismon Street.

When several people tried to get him to stop, he allegedly attacked them and then left the area.

Police paperwork stated that police eventually found Edwards, and the baby just a few streets away.

Edwards was taken to the Allegheny County Jail and faces charges of aggravated assault, false identification and endangering the welfare of a child.

The baby remained at the hospital Thursday in intensive care with broken ribs and suffering from seizures. Her family said doctors were able to stop the brain bleeds from which the 3-month-old was suffering.
