No more desks: Missouri school district offers students flexible seating arrangements

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Who needs desks at school? A Missouri school district is giving students a more comfortable seating arrangement.

Several classrooms in Independence have ditched the traditional classroom desks for futons, wobble chairs and other comfortable chairs. KMBC reported.

Teachers believe the more relaxed environment will make students more excited to learn.

"I've been trying throughout the years to spruce it up and make it feel like home," Little Blue Elementary School teacher Ashley Hinck told KMBC. "This year I decided we're going full-on flexible seating. Last year we didn't use the desks much because I gave the kids a choice on where they wanted to sit last year anyway. We do lots of work around the room, and the desk just took up a lot of space in the classroom and I said, 'We don't need those. We're just going to get rid of 'em.'"

Wednesday's first day of school certainly had a different feel for the students in Independence, with a much more relaxed atmosphere their parents and grandparents never experienced.
