AHN receiving calls from hospitals around country asking to take ICU patients

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny Health Network has received calls from Covid hotspots around the country seeking intensive care and other health care help over the last several weeks.

“We have been receiving calls from around the country asking whether or not we can take patients from Oklahoma, from Florida, from Texas because they’re running out of ICU (space), and they’re asking us to step in,” said David Holmberg, CEO of AHN parent company Highmark Health.

In an interview with the Business Times on Thursday, Holmberg and other key members of the AHN team said that he’s proud of the fact that the hospital network’s clinicians have built a name for themselves as experts in the pandemic, but it’s a worrying thing that the calls are coming in the first place.
