Consol temporarily shuts mine after employees test positive for COVID-19

PITTSBURGH — Consol Energy Inc. has temporarily closed down the Bailey coal mine for two weeks after two employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Employees at the underground mine, which is under Washington and Greene counties, were told over the weekend of the measure, which is in line with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations. The other mines at the Pennsylvania Mining Complex — Harvey and Enlow Fork, along with the preparation plant — will remain open with enhanced precautions.

Consol (NYSE: CEIX) made the move after finding out last Wednesday that an employee at Bailey tested positive for the novel coronavirus; the employee hasn’t been at work and has been self-quarantined. Others who had close contact with the person had also been notified and asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Friday, one of the close contacts also tested positive for COVID-19.
