Gulf Tower put under condemnation notice as owner Rugby Realty works to repair fire damage

PITTSBURGH — The blue piece of paper posted on the entrance of the Gulf Tower downtown is the kind of notice you might be more likely to find on a long-abandoned house in a struggling city neighborhood.

Yet following a considerable fire in the structure’s basement a few weeks ago, the city of Pittsburgh has posted a condemnation notice on the Gulf Tower, a 44-story building totaling more than 437,000 square feet, declaring it unsafe and unfit for occupancy.

Amid recent reports on the cause of the fire, Larry Walsh, chief operating officer and principal of Rugby Realty Co. Inc., which owns the building, emphasized the company has brought in crews to repair the building.
