Pittsburgh Marathon returns in person, will inject millions into local economy

PITTSBURGH — The annual Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is returning in person on May 1, 2022 after being hosted virtually for the past two years due to the pandemic.

It’s an event that will draw over 30,000 runners and spectators to the city, who in addition to participating in the events, are looking to patronize Pittsburgh restaurants and hotels for dining and lodging.

Troy Schooley, the CEO of P3R which organizes all major races in Pittsburgh, said that early projections estimate that the race will directly inject $20 million into the local economy and that over 9,000 room nights have been booked in downtown hotels.

“The majority of the hotels are sold out downtown,” Schooley said. “Speaking to some of the downtown restaurants and trying to make some different reservations, throughout the weekend, they’re already full, which is great. There’ll be a buzz around the city, especially in the downtown area, starting on Thursday as people come into town.”
