BEDFORD, Pa,None — Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to the summer vacation season. Channel 11 wants to help you save money with ideas for a one tank trip. Channel 11's Jennifer Abney took a trip to Bedford, Pa. to find out what it has to offer for families on a budget.

Dennis Tice from the Bedford County Visitors Bureau describes Bedford as "real world Mayberry." Complete with antique shops, covered bridges and parks on the square he said Bedford is a place filled with natural wonders.

Tice said the nearby Lincoln Caverns offer a variety of activities including camping, hiking, biking swimming, boating and fishing. He said another great place for all of those things is Shawnee State Park and lake, where you can rent a cabin for as little as $130 a week.

Bedford is also rich in history according to Tice.

"A lot of people like to come down and see some of the little sites, such as Old Bedford Village, he said.

Visitors can enjoy colonial re-enactments and crafts. Admission is $10 for adults and kids under six get in free.

Another high tech attraction is Bedford's GPS crosswords, which are free. "It's a game to use with your family. You can teach them navigation," explained Tice.

Tice said the answers are found thru coordinates in many areas around Bedford.

If you are looking for a luxurious getaway then Tice said the Omni Bedford Springs may be just your speed . It was founded in 1796 and recently underwent a $120 million makeover.

"We've had ten different presidents visit the resort from George Washington to the Reagans", said Scott Stuckey, General Manager.

People staying at the hotel said the rooms are just as impressive as the guest list.

We have a nice room, a very nice room. I could get used to this real easy," said one woman from Pittsburgh.

Just recently, Golf Week Magazine named the Omni Bedford Springs golf course the top course in the state.

Stuckey said children are welcome at the hotel as well. It offers kid camps and family activities.

"We have a s'mores kit that you can pick up in the tavern and everything is in there. You have your marshmallows, graham crackers, Hershey bars and your stick so you can roast your marshmallows over the fire pit," said Stuckey.

Channel 11 found rooms with special offers for $149 a night.
