12 homeless after fire spreads to 5 homes in Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG, Pa. — Fire spread to five homes in Wilkinsburg early Wednesday. Two of them were destroyed and one partially collapsed.

One person who jumped from a window to escape the four-alarm fire on Pennwood Avenue suffered minor injuries.

No one else was seriously hurt.

"That's my childhood home. Everything is gone, her memories are gone," Chrissy Carey said about her grandmother's house.  "The only thing I can think of is thank God my grandmother is alive."

Authorities said someone ran to a nearby fire station to alert firefighters to the fire, which spread very quickly shortly before 3 a.m.

Twelve people who were forced out of their homes by the fire will receive help from the American Red Cross.

Two of the homes were immediately torn down.
