Pastor, police working to find who carved racial slur into church van

PITTSBURGH — A local pastor can’t understand why someone would carve a racial slur into a church van used to give back to the community.

“It’s really sad. We have used that van for food distribution,” Pastor Cheryl Jones said. “We’ve driven our kids to events. We pick up people in the community.”

Jones is the pastor of Greater Hope Ministries. She was right in the middle of donating the van to another group when she spotted the slur carved into it.

“We were doing a walk through around the van. He said, ‘Look here.’ And of course I looked and he is African American too and we kind of looked at each other,” Jones said.

She said there’s never been problems like this before. Police are investigating what happened and are looking for camera footage from that area.
