• Hempfield Twp. borrows salt after disaster emergency declared

    Updated:

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Hempfield Township and neighboring south Greensburg were telling people to stay off the roads, but on Friday, Hempfield was able to borrow some salt from PennDOT.

The salt shipments are Band-Aids to the bigger problem.  The state told Channel 11 reporter Joe Holden that a widespread salt shortage is driving the problem.

“The state through PennDOT loaned us 100 tons of salt.  I'm sure it opened a few eyes with municipalities and salt conservation.  It's putting everybody in the bind and starting to affect public safety,” said Director of Public Works Mike Volpe.
