• Back to normal after post-Christmas storm; More snow this weekend

PITTSBURGH - Things are basically back to normal following a post-Christmas storm that left more than a foot of snow in some northern counties and several inches of accumulation in and around Greater Pittsburgh. However, Severe Weather Team 11 says that more snow is on the way.

Meteorologist Kevin Benson says that the arrival of a low-pressure system late Friday into Saturday will likely generate another inch or two of snowfall. The precipitation will pale in comparison to what fell on the day after Christmas, but it still has the potential to cause problems.

On Thursday, thousands of travelers tried again to make it home after being stranded because of the fierce midweek storm. Most were able to do so, but it was no picnic. Many side streets remained snow-covered. In addition, a light freezing rain in the morning created somewhat icy roadways across western Pennsylvania.

    Utility companies reported scattered outages.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission lifted travel restrictions that it implemented Wednesday on more than 350 miles of its mainline. Turnpike maintenance crews, on Thursday morning, reported sporadic snow in some parts of the Channel 11 News viewing area. The wet western section of the Turnpike was still being treated as needed. Motorists were urged to use caution and anticipate changing roadway conditions.

Severe Weather Team 11 Chief Meteorologist Stephen Cropper said the National Weather Service called Wednesday's snow -- 4.4 inches at the NWS Weather Forecast Office in Moon Township -- the biggest accumulation total since 5.2 inches in Feb. 2012 and 4.5 inches in Jan. 2012.

After a mostly cloudy but cold Thursday with only a little light precipitation, Friday is expected to be clear before the arrival of that aforementioned low-pressure system right around midnight.
