Canceled flights, delays, baggage issues: 11 Investigates breaks down the best and worst airlines

PITTSBURGH — Are you booking your 2020 vacation? You may want to hold off if you’re looking at using a specific airline.

The Department of Transportation keeps tabs on canceled flights, delays, mishandled baggage and bumped passengers.

According to the numbers, the airline that did the worst last year when it came to canceled flights was American Airlines, with just over 2.5%. Next was Southwest, and then United.

The winner for the best airline with the fewest canceled flights was Delta, with fewer than 1%.

Frontier had the worst numbers when it came to getting flights to their destination on time with over a quarter being late. The best, once again, was Delta, with just about 16% of flights arriving late.

Here’s a look at the numbers of mishandled bags:

Delta was dinged for having the most expensive tickets, with an average price of about $390. Spirit Airlines was the most affordable, with an average ticket price under $100. Next was Frontier with an average ticket price of about $105, and Allegiant at about $136 a ticket.

The number of passengers involuntarily denied boarding hit a record low in 2018. Last year, the numbers more than doubled with 27 for every million passengers denied boarding. The worst for bumping passengers was American Airlines. Delta was the best.
