New details emerge about canceled Three Rivers Regatta

PITTSBURGH — The cancellation of the Three Rivers Regatta took many people by surprise, and Channel 11 has learned that in the weeks since the investigation has continued to grow.

The regatta was scheduled for Aug. 2-4, but on Tuesday, July 30, organizers abruptly announced that it would not happen.

By the end of the week a lawsuit had been filed against the organizers.

"It goes beyond just the non-payments to Pittsburgh police," Mayor Bill Peduto said. "Other vendors that have contacted the city saying that they have not been paid as well."

Target 11's Rick Earle has learned that at least a dozen venders said they haven't been paid.

The Three Rivers Regatta board made the decision to cancel the event after learning promoter Derek Weber was unable to get liability insurance.

The board says Weber mislead it and shared reports that items had been paid.

"You know, the board has a fiduciary duty but I don't hold the board at blame. I mean, there were falsified reports, it appears that they were being given, and they were not aware of it until a week before," Peduto said.
