New city restrictions in place to keep people apart during coronavirus pandemic

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh city parks remain open, but there are new restrictions in place to keep people apart.

Over the weekend, city officials said park rangers and police officers saw people not social distancing. Park trails were overcrowded and some groups were playing basketball and soccer.

“We need to remind people that close contact sports are not safe right now,” said Chris Togneri with Pittsburgh Police.

The city closed off overlooks on Mount Washington due to overcrowding. Playgrounds are shut down and crews took down all basketball rims.

Police said they observed parents ignoring guidelines and letting their kids play on the equipment. In other areas like North Park, there were also large groups of people not staying apart.

“There was a running group. There was about 15 of them and they were getting ready for their run, sitting on the ground, stretching and they were all packed in together,” said Bob Caler.

“I just think that people were just so happy to get out and do something instead of staying home,” said Claira Caler.

Signs are now posted in areas that are closed.
