Wexford daycare only open to care for kids of essential employees

PITTSBURGH — Daycare workers said there was some confusion about how to handle the coronavirus pandemic and the governor’s orders. One Wexford facility is now only caring for the children of essential business employees.

Solid Foundations Academy has a new normal: empty rooms, empty seats. It was granted a waiver from the state and is now considered an essential business after declaring they would limit who they could care for.

On a normal day, the facility has 75 kids. Monday, there were just five.

Many parents have been laid off from work and are staying home with their children. With the numbers of kids coming in every day, the owner said she is not charging parents who have decided to keep their children home.

“Their parents are working on the front lines and the one mom is actually trying to develop the vaccine to fight COVID-19. So if they’re not here, she can’t be at work,” said Beth Rupert, the owner.
