Arrest made in theft of money at Allegheny County Courthouse

PITTSBURGH — The man accused of stealing more than $600 in child support that was left at the metal detector at the entrance to the Allegheny County Courthouse was arrested on Monday afternoon.

Jeremiah Barsczewski, 26, formerly of Brookline, was questioned after sheriff‘s deputies spent several days reviewing video footage and court records, Sheriff‘s Lt. Jack Kearney said.

“After a short time, Barsczewski confessed to this crime,” Kearney said.

Kearney has said the envelope was mistakenly left at the metal detector on Wednesday after another man passed through security procedures. About 90 minutes later, Barsczewski came back and asked the deputy for the envelope. Several hours later, the real owner attempted to reclaim the envelope.

Barsczewski is awaiting arraignment on theft charges, Kearney said.
