Bishop Canevin claims WPIAL 1A championship

PITTSBURGH — In just his second year as head coach of the Bishop Canevin Crusaders, Rich Johnson not only won Skylights Coach of the Year, he also led his team to a WPIAL Championship in 1-A.

The Crusaders beat Our Lady of Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon, 42-7.

The turning point of the game came in the second quarter when the Crusaders scored three touchdowns just 1:55 apart on the clock. Xavier Nelson scored three touchdowns in that quarter. He caught two passes for long touchdowns and also scored on a pick six.

Johnson said, “We’re proud of our guys we’re fighters. We’re told we’re too little and all that stuff we don’t care what nobody says. We’re gonna keep working, gonna get in our group. They say you can’t hear outside noise from inside the construction zone. We do what we do, and we don’t listen to nobody else.”

This was Canevin’s first WPIAL Championship in football in 31 years.

Canevin will move on to the state semi-finals next weekend.
