Officials ID pedestrian killed in South Side dump truck accident

PITTSBURGH — Authorities have identified the 43-year-old man who was killed after a dump truck crashed into two pedestrians Wednesday.

Investigators said the accident happened on East Carson Street near the Smithfield Street Bridge in Pittsburgh’s South Side around 7 a.m.

Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic reported the victim has been identified as Christopher Williams, of Pittsburgh.

“The second victim is in critical condition with head injuries,” Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonta Toler said.

So far, there is no word on what caused the crash.

“The condition of the road surface, the weather, the time of day -- all of those will be factors,” Toler said.

Paramedics took the dump truck driver to the hospital to be checked out.

“Right now, it’s too early to say (if the driver will face charges). We have to determine all factors before we can see what charges, if any, will be filed,” Toler said.

Parts of Carson Street and the Smithfield Street Bridge were shut down while police investigated the scene. The closures forced drivers to be rerouted during the morning rush hour.
