CDC: Most food-borne illnesses caused by leafy greens

PITTSBURGH — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a consumer alert involving fruits and vegetables.

The CDC said leafy greens, like kale and spinach, are to blame for most food-borne illnesses in the United States.

There are 10 million cases of food-borne illness per year in the country, and during the past 10 years, 22 percent of those were caused by leafy greens, according to the CDC.

Officials added that there is no reason to worry because most meals are safe.
