Cyber Monday shattering sales records

PITTSBURGH — Cyber Monday is on pace to be the biggest one-day shopping spree ever.  As of noon today, sales were up 24 percent over last year.  Consumer Reporter Robin Taylor takes a look at what's trending.

Smartphones and tablet computers are helping with the sales boom.  While the bargains are out there, I found some deals were already sold out before noon.

Cyber Monday deals on Amazon include the Kindle Fire for $129, along with Blu-rays for less than $10 and DVDs for less than $5.

Discounts at Walmart include an Android tablet for $59, a 32-inch LCD TV for $189 and an iPod bundle for $179.

At Target, I found a Tom Tom Go GPS for $69, a 46-inch 1080p TV for $379 and a Kitchen Aid stand mixer for $199.

These three retail giants are running cyber specials all week long.

"Now that people are becoming so much more comfortable shopping online, I think that Cyber Monday is going to give Black Friday a run for its money," said Trae Bodge, senior writer for RetailMeNot.com’s Insider Magazine.

A RetailMeNot survey found consumers are shopping for clothing and accessories, followed closely by electronics, then toys.

When they find great deals they're sharing them on Twitter.

"Electronics is definitely a big category on Twitter and some of the biggest brands that we're hearing about are Apple and the iPhone.  We're also hearing a lot of tweets about Samsung.  X-box is another brand that we're hearing in that category," said Shane Steele, director of sales and marketing for Twitter.

Lego and Barbie are also trending on Twitter, as are clothing and household gifts at Macy's and Kohl's, but some deals are already sold out.

I found some Cyber Monday sales on TVs and gaming systems at Walmart are no longer available online.  For a detailed list of Cyber Monday deals, go to RetailMeNot.com.  http://www.retailmenot.com/deals/cybermonday
