PLEASANT HILLS, Pa. - A Pleasant Hills man is facing several charges after more than 800 images of child pornography were found on his computer, police said.

In April, a police officer conducting an undercover investigation into the sharing of child porn identified a computer on a file sharing network. The computer was later found to belong to Michael Smith.

According to a criminal complaint, Smith, 44, told police that he had viewed images of child porn on his computer and deleted them when he saw them, saying, “It was a mistake, I should not have viewed it on my computer.”

However, a preliminary forensic review found images of child pornography in excess of 800.

Neighbors told Channel 11’s Rick Earle that Smith is a caseworker for Allegheny County Children, Youth and Families. The agency declined to comment but did confirm that Smith was hired in 1996 and has been placed on unpaid leave.

He was arrested Tuesday and is charged with sexual abuse of children for dissemination and possession of child porn and criminal use of a communication facility.

He was released on non-monetary and faces a preliminary hearing next week.
