• Explosion rocks ATI plant; no one injured


    DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Emergency crews responded to an explosion at a Derry Township industrial plant Wednesday night.

    The explosion happened about 9 p.m. at the Teledyne Vasco plant.

    Officials said the explosion left behind a large hole in the roof of the building. Crews worked to put out small fires inside.

    The explosion was caused by water that came in contact with hot metal at the plant, ATI spokesman Daniel Greenfield said. The explosion damaged a portion of a building at the plant,Greenfield said.

    No injuries were reported. All workers were accounted for.

    ATI's website states that its Latrobe facility is a specialty melting operation that has an electric arc furnace for the production of a variety of specialty alloys. The plant's melt shop produces many of Allegheny Ludlum and ATI Allvac's specialty and nickel alloys.
