Fans react: Ben Roethlisberger officially announces retirement

PITTSBURGH — It’s a sad day in Pittsburgh for Steelers fans. A lot of fans told Channel 11 on Thursday that they are really going to miss seeing number 7 on the field at Heinz Field.

The news spread quickly in the Strip District of Ben Roethlisberger retiring after 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Some fans at Kelly O’s Diner are sad to see him go.

“I think the city will love him forever and he’s been a part of my kids’ lives and grandkids lives and we are really going to miss him. We thank him for everything,” said Rene Demko.

Other fans aren’t ready to say goodbye.

“I think he still got more juice left, but it’s going to be sad to watch him go honestly,” said Kris Brown.

“He served his purpose he gave us a good 18 years. Let him go enjoy his family, but he got some more years in him but if he’s done, he’s done,” said Darwyn Jones.

Several fans said they are grateful for everything Ben has done for this city. Over at Yinzers, they said it’s an end of an era.

“It’s a darn shame. He got us two rings here and he was a hero to the city, definitely a great guy,” said Christian Robinson.

“It wasn’t a major surprise but it’s sad in a way. For years and years, we knew we were going to be competitive and have a real good chance of winning,” said Jim Coen.

“He had a good run. I wish him well and he gets to spend time with his family, now that’s very Pittsburgh. We love Ben! Go Steelers! Katherine McBrien said.

“Goodbye Big Ben!” said Harper and Sawyer Hunter.

Harper and Sawyer Hunter are visiting Pittsburgh from Florida so Ben has fans from everywhere who will miss him.
