Girl, 6, briefly missing after mom unknowingly sends her to closed school

PITTSBURGH — Channel 11’s Dave Bondy was there as a 6-year-old girl was reunited with her mother after briefly going missing Wednesday.

Bondy was at Murray Elementary in the Pittsburgh Public School District after officials were forced to close the school because of a power outage.

While there, Bondy spoke to a mother who said she didn’t know that school had been canceled and she had sent her daughter to school on a Port Authority Transit bus.

“The bus did a detour and we couldn’t find her, and it was a quick scare but I am glad she is back here safe with me,” Carlen Richard said.

Fortunately, Richard said, a school employee was on the same bus and received a call that Haylee Hall was missing. He said he noticed her on the bus and brought her back to the school.

“We have a bunch of supportive people in the community that knows of her, and they made sure that she got back where she was supposed to go instead of getting off anywhere,” said Richard.

“Everything is back to normal,” Haylee said.

Crews are working to repair downed power lines on Bedford Avenue, and the school is expected to reopen Thursday.
