Girl, 7, scarred by witnessing street shootout

HAZELWOOD, Pa. — A young girl was playing outside Monday afternoon in Hazelwood when, authorities say, she became a witness to a shootout in the street.

The shooting was reported Monday at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Mansion Street. Witnesses told Channel 11 News they heard six or seven shots.

The 7-year-old girl's mother told Channel 11's Renee Kaminski that her daughter is now too afraid to go outside.

“She was terrified. I’ve never seen her that scared in her life. She’s never been afraid like that,” said Patrice Church.

Church said her daughter, who’s in second grade, was playing with her friends at the time.

“A silver car pulled up, and the car started shooting out the windows. A man in a white shirt started shooting back. The silver car crashed into another car and then drove away,” Church said.

Authorities said there was youth football practice on a nearby field, as well as children on a playground. Thankfully, no children were injured.

“(My daughter) dropped her bike and ran. She waited behind a tree until the shooting was over,” Church said.

So far, no arrests have been made.

“I don’t think she’s going to get over this. She’s changed forever. A little girl who came up here to ride her bike is not the one living in my house anymore,” Church said.
