• Investigators say 5 overnight fires in Glassport could be connected

PITTSBURGH - Investigators said they believe the five fires that were reported within two hours of each other in Glassport overnight could be connected.

The first fire was reported at an abandoned church on Ohio Avenue just before 11 p.m. Monday, officials said.

A second report of fires in three garages on Indiana Avenue was reported about 12:30 a.m.

Authorities said about 15 minutes later, another garage fire was reported at 9th Street and Cherry Way.

“I just looked out the window and saw everything on fire,” neighbor Dave Homlotis said. “By the time I backed my car up down the alley, the whole roof collapsed on my truck.”

Investigators told Channel 11’s Brittny McGraw that they believe most of the fires are connected.

"We arrived on scene and had three garages fully involved with two houses starting,” Glassport Fire Chief Wayne Lewis said. “Fast reaction by the fire department protected those houses and the individuals on hand are grateful."

The string of fires remains under investigation. Anyone with information to help investigators is asked to contact police.

“Our concern is that we have someone running around starting fires, and we have some older structures and vacant buildings. We don’t want this to escalate,” Glassport Mayor Michael Evanovich said.
