Man wakes up during attempted home invasion; Video shows suspect

CANONSBURG, Pa. — Authorities have released surveillance video in hopes of identifying a man wanted in connection with an attempted home invasion in Washington County.

According to police, the video shows a man break into a Canonsburg home, but he immediately leaves.

“The actor, just as he was entering the house, saw the victim. He was surprised and ran off,” Canonsburg police Detective Alexander Coghill said.

Coghill said the man went to the home thinking no one was home, but the homeowner was actually inside sleeping.

Authorities said the homeowner wasn’t injured and the burglar didn’t get away with anything.

“Typically burglars will knock on doors, and when they don’t get a response, they will assume someone isn’t home and they’ll break in,” Coghill said.

Detectives are hoping the man will be identified.

“If someone in that area had an encounter with him earlier in the day, usually what they will do is knock and if someone does answer they will make up a story and move on,” Coghill said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police.
