Mother, 1-year-old child escape blaze at log home

AMWELL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A mother and her 19-month-old baby safely escaped a fire at their Amwell Township home Tuesday morning.

Authorities said firefighters were called to a log cabin home on Ikes Road about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the woman’s grandmother, the mother heard the smoke detector, grabbed her son and ran out of the house.

“She didn’t sleep soundly and she heard the popping. She got out right away. She’s safe and that’s the main thing,” Ruth Iams said. “They can’t be replaced, and the house can be.”

Several fire companies responded to the home to help fight the flames. Firefighters told Channel 11 News that a lack of water in the remote area caused some problems.

Iams said her granddaughter and her husband lost a lot in the fire, but they plan to rebuild.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
