Penn State names Barbour new AD

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State named former University of California athletic director Sandy Barbour its new AD at a Saturday news conference at Beaver Stadium.

Barbour, 54, served as Cal's athletic director for 10 years before resigning last month. She becomes Penn State's first female AD. Prior to working in Berkeley, Calif., Barbour was at Notre Dame, serving terms as senior athletic administrator and associate athletic director.

Barbour replaces Dave Joyner, who served from November 2011 until announcing last month that he was stepping down effective Aug. 1.

Penn State president Eric Barron declared Barbour, who was a two-sport athlete at Wake Forest, the "first" and "unanimous" choice of the university's search committee.

"We asked a lot from this candidate, and I believe our choice will deliver on all counts,"Barron said.
