Pittsburgh leaders take step toward repairing 2 aging bridges

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh leaders took a big step toward repairing two aging bridges within the city.

On Tuesday, council unanimously approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with an engineering company, H.W. Lochner, Inc., for costs associated with the bridges’ design plans.

The contract, which is not to exceed $878,570.80, involves improvements and repairs to the Elizabeth Street Bridge in Hazelwood, and the Herron Avenue Bridge, which links Lawrenceville and Polish Hill.

Channel 11 spoke with city residents who are pleased to learn of the plans.

“I’m really happy that they are looking at the bridges, and repairing the ones that are in poor shape,” said Tom Webber, a local resident.

Bob Schuffert, whose business, Automotive Medic, is located right by the bridge in Hazelwood, told Channel 11 that the structure is starting to crumble.

“There’s gaping holes on it,” he said.

According to our Trib partners, construction is tentatively set to start in 2025. The Elizabeth Street Bridge is set to receive steel and concrete repairs, new guiderails and more. The Herron Ave. Bridge, meanwhile, will see expansion joint and bearing replacement, along with repairs to sidewalks, concrete barriers and more.
