Police: 17-year-old leads officers on chase in stolen car, crashes in Strip District

PITTSBURGH — A 17-year-old was arrested after leading police on a chase in a stolen car and eventually crashing in the Strip District Wednesday morning, officials said.

Authorities said the chase started when officers spotted a stolen Ford Explorer in Bloomfield.

They said the chase ended when the driver crashed into a garage at Guardian Storage Facility, at 29th Street and Liberty Avenue. Investigators said the teen was going at least 50 mph when he crashed.

The driver tried to run off, but was quickly captured by police, officials said. He was cleared at Children’s Hospital and then charged with reckless driving, eluding the police and receiving stolen property. His name has not been released.

“I’m surprised the guy’s still alive,” said David Locke.

Locke, who works for Thomas Geil Garage Doors, was at the scene Wednesday working on fixing the damage.

“You’re probably looking at $5,000 to $10,000 in damage,” Locke said.
