Police: Woman fights off robbery attempt with flat iron

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — A 45-year-old Uniontown man, who police said has spent the last decade in and out of jail, is accused of trying to rob his child’s mother at knifepoint.

According to police, David Sims got into a Murray Avenue home about 3 a.m. Thursday and tried to rob the woman and her current boyfriend while armed with a kitchen knife.

“He does know the female victim, they have a child together, but no relationship,” Police Lt. Thomas Kolencik said. “He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a kitchen knife.”

According to the criminal complaint, Sims walked upstairs and demanded money from the woman and her boyfriend.

“It was a large kitchen knife. He actually pushed it into the stomach and demanded money while pushing it further,” Kolencik said.

That's when the woman said she hit Sims with a flat iron.

Kolencik said Ford won't be charged because she was acting in self-defense.

Sims remains in the Fayette County Prison on burglary and other charges.
