Removing snow, ice from your driveway could cost you more this winter

PITTSBURGH — Removing snow and ice from your driveway and getting your car ready for snow and ice could cost you more this winter.

“If I pay more, you pay more. That’s just like anything else,” said Damon Rauso, who owns Lockhart Tire on the North Side.

Rauso told 11 News he’s paying higher prices on everything, including tires and car batteries.

“There’s a shortage. I’m having trouble getting certain batteries,” he said. “There’s only like two companies that make car batteries.”

Rauso says car batteries have gone from $100 before COVID to now costing $160 and higher. He also says the price of regular and snow tires has gone up by 20% in two years. And then there’s removing the snow at your house.

“We probably sold over a thousand bags of ice melts, car brooms and ice scrapers and snow shovels,” said Steve Miller.

Miller owns Miller Ace Hardware with his family. He also says inflation is hurting his pockets, but they stocked up on their winter items pre-season for better pricing. Miller tells Channel 11 customers could see higher prices on items to winterize their home and to remove snow depending on when they buy them.

“We get a pounding, and it’s like going to the grocery store. Channel 11 says a storm is coming. You gotta go to the grocery store and the hardware store,” Miller said.

You can always call around to different stores to compare prices to get the most bang for your buck.
