Safety concern forces Mt. Washington church to temporarily close

PITTSBURGH — Saint Mary of the Mount Church in Mt. Washington is closed temporarily because of unspecified safety concerns about the church's ceiling, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced Friday.

Bishop David Zubik made the decision to temporarily close the church in consultation with church Pastor Michael Stumpf, the diocese's statement said.

Daily and weekend Masses will be celebrated at the parish's Sullivan Hall, 115 Bigham St., until repairs can be made. It’s unclear how long the church could be closed.

A popular venue for weddings, an online church calendar shows wedding events have been booked in four time slots in July and seven time slots in August.
